Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Slab avalanches will be larger and more likely on leeward aspects, as you gain elevation, and get closer to the Sierra Crest.  Critical snow and terrain assessment will be essential today.

    Yesterday’s storm brought snow accumulation ranging from 4” up to 23” depending on the region. Recent observations suggest the highest storm totals are in the Mammoth area and along the Sierra crest.  Strong winds have been largely out of the southwest and concentrated at higher elevations. While winds are expected to drop significantly throughout the day, they will continue at transportable speeds. Expect the size and distribution of fresh wind slabs to be greater in areas with higher snow totals. Large drifts, recent cornice growth, hollow upside-down feeling snow, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Do your own localized assessments and be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions.

    Storm instabilities, both slabs, and sluffs, will be sensitive today, particularly in the Mammoth area, at higher elevations, and in areas nearer the Sierra crest. Large avalanches failing within the new snow and at the new/old snow interface will be possible in all areas. Southwest winds have drifted snow onto leeward slopes, making larger and more frequent avalanches possible on northeasterly terrain features. Carefully assess for shooting cracks in upside-down new snow or long-running sluffs where the surface lacks cohesion. Be extra cautious of your exposure to terrain features that increase the consequences of avalanches. This includes road cuts, gully features, cliff bands, and mid-slope depressions. Avoiding steep terrain with overhead exposure to avalanche start zones is the safest way to manage your risk of getting caught.

Avalanche Discussion

The hazard this morning is driven by new snow and wind that began yesterday as a winter-like storm moved into the region. Significantly more snow was recorded in the Mammoth area and at higher elevations along the Sierra crest. Anticipate larger, more sensitive slabs and more dangerous conditions in these areas. Snowfall rates peaked overnight, and showers are expected to continue throughout the day. Though winds will be less than yesterday, they are expected to remain at transportable speeds today. Track snow accumulations today and remain critical of your exposure to terrain features and overhead hazards.
