Kernpunkte

Heavy snowfall and strong wind has created very dangerous avalanche conditions on wind loaded middle and upper elevation terrain. Avoid traveling on or below steep wind loaded slopes as natural avalanches are possible and human triggered avalanches are very likely. Cautious route-finding is essential to steer clear of large avalanche paths and complex terrain.

    Recent snow the last 5 days combined with sustained southwest wind 30-40 mph overnight has formed stiff wind slabs 1-4 feet deep in the middle and upper elevations. 48 hour storm totals by the end of today could reach close to 2 feet of dense, heavy snow. Avalanches could break on storm interfaces or deeper on a widespread rain crust. Destructive avalanches failing on the rain crust are capable of breaking wide and running far downslope. Due to the strong and consistent direction of the wind, unstable wind slabs could be found further down-slope or cross-slope than expected. 

    Triggering a large avalanche within the recent snow could step down to weaker snow formed in November. Very steep, rocky, and wind-affected terrain is the most suspect.

Avalanche Discussion

Just over 4” of snow water equivalent (SWE) has fallen since December 17th. Another 1” of SWE is possible by the end of today. All this snow is sitting on a widespread rain and rime crust formed 12/10 and initially buried 12/17. This crust is well connected across large terrain features. There’s a lot of variability in how this rain crust is bonding to recent snow (Check this observation for more information). Regardless of how this snow is bonding to the crust, a lot of weight is being added to a well connected bed surface. For this reason, natural avalanches are possible on steep, exposed terrain that is rapidly loaded by southwest wind. 

Numerous layers of density changes and storm interfaces (graupel) have formed weak interfaces where avalanches could break above the rain crust. An individual was critically injured two days ago on Teton Pass riding very steep terrain. A large avalanche triggered by explosives crossed both lanes of Teton Pass this morning. The snowpack is experiencing rapid change and conservative decision making is necessary. While wind loaded terrain should be avoided altogether, less suspect terrain should be approached cautiously today.

Access to terrain remains difficult in the Snake River Range due to a lack of lower elevation snow coverage.
