New snow may fall on Thursday down to 1400m and be redistributed by strong to severe gale winds from the northwest. Wind slab danger may increase above 2000m. It is likely to be isolated to ridge crests and remain reasonably small.
Recent Avalanche Activity
No observations have been possible during this storm but we would expect a widespread loose wet avalanche cycle to have occurred on Wednesday afternoon. Please provide any snowpack or avalanche observations using the link below.
Current Snowpack Conditions
Snow cover below 1800m is intermittent, especially on north and west-facing aspects. Cover above 1800m is consistent, particularly on south and east aspects. No significant weakness has been noted in the snowpack below 1800m. There are few observations of the strength of the snowpack above 1800m so continue to be cautious at upper elevations. Rain has saturated the snowpack at all elevations on Wednesday, and the freezing level will remain overnight, meaning that loose wet avalanches are likely to continue until the freezing level drops during Thursday.
Mountain Weather
Heavy rain at all elevations will ease and turn to snow down to 1400m on Thursday late morning. The gale to severe gale northwest winds will continue. The freezing level will drop from 2200m to 1900m on Thursday morning.
Sliding Danger
An ice axe and crampons need to be carried for mountain travel as the snow refreezes as the freezing level drops.
