Avalanche Activity

LO 14/3 Instabilities remaining in windslab W,NW,N,NE above 1100m, consolidating during day. Cornices! Stable elsewhere. Mod hazard

Forecast Snow Stability: Instabilities that remain in recent windslab accumulations will gradually consolidate through the day. Areas most affected will be steep wind sheltered locations, such as gully tops and coire rims, on West through North to North-East aspects above 1100 metres. Large cornices that exist above these locations may be prone to collapse in the milder daytime temperatures. Elsewhere the snowpack will be well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Very light occasional showers throughout the period will fall as snow above 900 metres during the night and 1100 metres during the day. Moderate South-South-Easterly winds overnight will become light by morning then increase in strength and veer South-Westerly during the afternoon. The freezing level will rise to around 1150 metres during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Showers, which fell as snow above 1000 metres cleared to give a dry period around the middle of the day and returned mid afternoon. The freezing level was around 1100 metres. Winds were strong South-South-Easterly. ObservedSnowStability: Fresh accumulations of moderately bonded windslab are continuing to form in steep wind sheltered locations mainly on West through North to North-East aspects above 1100 metres. Cornices above these aspects are fragile and prone to collapse. Elsewhere the snowpack is well bonded and stable. At lower elevations a gradual thaw is continuing. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
