Avalanche Activity

Further warming to the high Alpine regions.

The mostly small wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in isolated cases. These avalanche prone locations are to be found in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. They are to be evaluated with care and prudence in particular in terrain where there is a danger of falling. These places are easy to recognise. On very steep sunny slopes and in steep rocky terrain the likelihood of avalanches will increase during the day. In particular transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are unfavourable. As a consequence of warming individual moist and wet avalanches are possible in the afternoon, but they will be mostly small, especially on extremely steep sunny slopes, and at the base of rock walls below approximately 2900 m.

Snowpack Structure

Less snow than usual is lying. The hard wind slabs are lying on soft layers in all aspects. The snowpack will be generally subject to considerable local variations. In steep terrain there is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. The surface of the snowpack will soften during the day, in particular on very steep sunny slopes below approximately 3000 m.

Tendency

Continuous warming. These conditions will foster a slight rise in the danger of moist avalanches as the day progresses in particular on very steep sunny slopes.
