Avalanche Activity

GC19/1Cold+snow showers unstable windslab sheltered gullies+ N-E-S slopes 850m+ cornices fragile old snow firm, icy Considerable Haz.

Forecast Snow Stability: Cold conditions will maintain in-depth weaknesses where deeper windslab exists on steeper slopes. New snow and wind transport of existing deposits will additionally load these areas. Areas most affected will be summit gullies and steep scarp slopes with a North through East to Southerly aspect above 850 metres. Windward slopes and areas clear of windslab will be mainly stable with firm snow becoming icy in places. Cornices will be fragile. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: A cold, fresh to strong generally Westerly airflow with snow showers overnight and through Thursday will affect the area. New snow amounts are uncertain due to the showery nature. The freezing level will initially be around 200 metres rising to 400 metres through the course of the day. Observed Weather Influences: A cold Westerly to North-Westerly airflow is affecting the area, the freezing level is around 400 metres. Winds have been fresh occasionally strong with light snow showers occurring mainly overnight. Summit temperatures remain around -6 centigrade. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of unstable windslab exist in wind sheltered locations, greatest accumulations are mainly in sheltered gullies and on slopes with a Northerly through East to South-Easterly aspect above 850 metres. Fragile cornices exist above some of these aspects. Stability on windward slopes is generally good becoming icy in places. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
