Avalanche Activity

The new snow and wind slabs represent the main danger. Along the border with France a considerable avalanche danger will persist in some regions.

In particular in the regions exposed to precipitation as well as at high altitude wind slabs formed. The fresh snow as well as the mostly small wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant above approximately 2500 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in steep terrain at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions and at transitions into gullies and bowls. Along the border with France in some localities danger level 3 (considerable) will be reached. Here the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and larger.

Snowpack Structure

Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In particular in shady places that are protected from the wind, high altitudes: Towards its surface, the snowpack is soft; its surface consists of loosely bonded snow. Low and intermediate altitudes: As a consequence of falling temperatures and sleet a crust formed on the surface. The surface of the snowpack will soften during the day. Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes.

Tendency

Some new snow to intermediate altitudes. The avalanche danger will persist.
