Strong winds and additional snowfall are to continue today. This forecast, combined with the significant snowfall that occurred overnight, have resulted in dangerous avalanche conditions above 8500 feet. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended today.

    The chance for natural and human triggered avalanches will increase today as additional snowfall and strong southwest to west winds further load slabs that were formed overnight by nearly a foot of new snow. These slabs are forming on faceted snow on north facing terrain above 8500' and on hard crusts at higher elevations on southerly aspects. Slab depths could reach as much as 3 feet later this afternoon in high elevation avalanche terrain that is prone to wind loading.  Steep slopes at mid elevations that show less signs of wind loading may also be sensitive with depths to eighteen inches given the rapid loading of the storm and the poor structure below.  Avalanches at low elevations are not expected today except for in isolated areas of very steep terrain. 

Avalanche Discussion

The current storm has quickly changed things from a shallow and fairly sparce early season snowpack with minimal avalanche concerns to one in which natural avalanche activity is likely at the upper elevations. Prior to the storm, in north facing terrain above 8500 the snowpack was entirely faceted. It was also shallow so the distribution of this problem is not as widespread as it can be.  Any slope with a component of southerly aspect has a melt-freeze crust(s) or on true south facing slopes, was bare ground in a lot of terrain.  The new snow that fell and is to continue to fall today is following a decreasing temperature trend and will be good for the snowpack overall.  The reason for the elevated avalanche danger of high is due to the new loading but also to the uncertainty of how much additional rapid loading from snowfall and strong winds will actually occur today. Natural activity is likely today, although the size of avalanches is not expected to be as large as a similar storm may cause later in the season when bed-surfaces are more uniform with less natural rock anchors.  The potential to trigger and be caught in an avalanche today is real and could occur in any steep terrain that formerly held adequate coverage.  If captured, there is a possibility of a full burial and a greater possibility of injury given all the hazards associated with a shallow snowpack. Use caution in all terrain, even non-avalanche terrain as these rocks, logs, and stumps are barely hidden under the snow surface. Avoid letting new snow frenzy take over in order to have a long and safe season.
