Kernpunkte

Watch for heightened avalanche conditions on steep, previously wind-loaded terrain above 9,500’ on north through east aspects. Stubborn wind slabs could be triggered where the snow has remained cold and dry. Monitor warming temperatures for wet loose avalanches on slopes facing the sun. If you encounter mushy and unsupportable snow, move to more sheltered terrain.

We will issue our last daily Avalanche Forecast of the season in this zone on Friday, April 10th. We will issue General Avalanche Information Bulletins as needed through April or early May.

    Temperatures barely dropped below freezing or remained above freezing last night. Monitor the weather and upper snowpack as the snow warms and destabilizes throughout the day on W-S-E aspects. Remember that these avalanches can start small and entrain large amounts of snow on steep, sustained slopes. They are also more likely around rock features that heat surrounding snow surfaces or slopes sheltered from the wind. Expect larger wet loose avalanches possible in the upper elevations.

    Triggering soft slab avalanches 1-3 feet deep on steep terrain will remain possible. These slabs may be more stubborn today and produce less obvious signs of instability such as shooting cracks. These avalanches were failing on wind-loaded upper elevation terrain with a poor bonding interface. Due to this interface, avalanches are capable of breaking wide cross-slope. Cold, dry snow still exists on shaded, northerly aspects where this problem is more likely. On these slopes, assess the stability of recent snow before committing to consequential terrain.

    The large avalanche in the Ski Lake area resulted in a burial with serious injuries and SAR evac after triggering a slab up to 3 feet deep.

A Transitional Snowpack

Temperatures remained above freezing at some weather stations last night such as Surprise Pinnacle in GTNP. Due to radiative cooling, a crust likely still developed on slopes that were impacted by the sun yesterday. Monitor how quickly this crust breaks down today and begins to destabilize the snow. High cloud cover should help mitigate the snow from warming drastically. The mountains began to shed wet loose avalanches yesterday. There are still plenty of steep slopes where more wet loose avalanches could occur today. 

Two days ago, numerous avalanches were triggered on wind-loaded terrain. These wind slabs failed on mid-storm density breaks such as graupel or deeper on the Dust Crust formed during the dry period at the end of March. This productive crust bed surface enabled avalanches to propagate far cross-slope. Warm temperatures the last two days with cold temperatures at night have helped settle and decrease the likelihood of triggering. We still aren’t out of the weeds quite yet. Assess the snowpack thoroughly by performing quick hand shear tests throughout your travels if you encounter stiffened snow surfaces, drifts, or terrain frequently wind-loaded.

We have removed the lower elevations from the forecast due to insufficient snow coverage below 7,500’. As five-scale avalanche forecasts wind down this week, we will continue to remain operational by providing General Avalanche Information Bulletins twice a week through spring depending on conditions and weather. We will also update the 24 Hour Data Summary (Big Sheet) until June 1st.
