    Persistent weak layers in the upper snowpack continue to show the potential to create large avalanches in isolated areas. While recent snow accumulations are not substantial, fresh wind loads have likely added stress to these layers. Triggering a large avalanche may be easier today on convex rollovers, unsupported terrain features, and in areas with recent wind deposits. Managing this problem requires extensive evaluation and deliberate terrain choice. Avalanches have been failing without prior warning signs like cracking or collapsing in the snowpack and several recent avalanches have been remotely triggered from a distance. Remember that persistent slab avalanches often propagate across and beyond terrain features that would otherwise confine surface instabilities such as wind or storm slabs. Use conservative terrain choices to limit your exposure.

    Winds have shifted around the compass rose and are continuing at transportable speeds out of the north today. Wind slabs will range in size and sensitivity today and may be found on all aspects. Be particularly cautious in areas with higher snow totals from yesterday’s quick-moving storm. This may include higher elevations and areas closer to the crest. It will be crucial to conduct your own localized assessments, while fresh deposits on solar aspects will likely be relatively small, more sizable, and stubborn wind slabs reside on easterly and northerly terrain features. Blowing snow, recent avalanche activity, large drifts, and recent cornice growth are all clues that can help you identify and avoid areas with recent wind deposits. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

Our snowpack has not yet received the memo that spring has arrived.  As we enter a period of more stable weather, it is still possible for the backcountry enthusiast to trigger a large and destructive avalanche. Keep this in mind as you form your tour plans for the day. As the sun comes back out there will be renewed potential for surface warming and wet snow avalanches. While cold temperatures and continued winds will likely keep this from becoming a stability concern today, it won’t be impossible to see small sluffs on solar aspects in sheltered areas. Conduct your own localized assessments and be prepared for a mixed bag of surface conditions and stability concerns if you decide to venture out today.
