This week's rain in Cache Valley fell as snow at upper elevations. Several inches of heavy snow accumulated on the rocks and shallow October snow that was lingering in north-facing terrain above about 8500' in elevation. Although we found a bit more than a foot of heavy snow in upper-elevation terrain yesterday, there is still nowhere near enough for safe recreation. We will start regular avalanche forecasting operations as soon as there is enough snow to cover the rocks, so stay tuned.

Now is a good time to inspect your rescue gear, ensure it's in working order, replace batteries, update the software, and practice companion rescue techniques with your backcountry partners.
We were pleasantly surprised by some heavy snow and a few inches of accumulation at upper elevations in the Central Bear River Range Thursday afternoon...This week's heavy wet snow is packing out well, potentially creating a good base. We're hoping for some more snow early next week.
A shortwave trough will dig into the northern Intermountain Region Monday into Tuesday, bringing light precipitation to the Bear River Range Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning. A few inches of snow may accumulate in upper elevation terrain. A colder air mass will move in behind the cold front, and much colder temperatures are expected in the mountains next week.
Yesterday, we observed periods of very heavy snowfall and found a bit more than a foot of dense snow from earlier this week, capping the moist October snow at 8900' in elevation.
