Snow drifts from the recent 2 feet of snow may be sensitive to a human trigger. In mid and upper elevation terrain, watch out for drifts of snow with a smooth surface. You can reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche by traveling on wind sculpted snow. 

Being caught in even a small avalanche can have deadly consequences, especially with firm snow surfaces and exposed rocks, ice, and vegetation.

    Watch out for recently formed wind slabs at middle and upper elevations on east-facing and south-facing slopes. Wind slabs exposed to the strong northwest wind are likely to be firm and stubborn to a human trigger, especially at upper elevations. Slabs found in wind sheltered locations at middle elevations are the main concern. This problem can be identified by looking for areas of smooth snow where your boot can penetrate deeper than boot-top. 

    The likelihood of finding a thin spot (like a buried rock) with this avalanche problem is increased due to the early season snowpack and could be the trigger-point for an avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

It should be recognized that today’s forecast includes some uncertainty. While today’s forecasting team is confident in the sensitivity and distribution of the avalanche problem, we just don’t have good data on size. The amount of snow available to transport after these early season storms is challenging to predict due to exposed ground vegetation holding onto snow. Poor visibility over the last two days has also challenged our ability to get field observations needed to determine size of any newly formed wind slabs.
