Incremental snowfall during the last week has developed sensitive slabs up to a foot thick that are resting above buried surface hoar, facets, and a firm crust. Additional snowfall and strong winds last night are adding stress to the upper snowpack, making these weak layers more susceptible to failure. Today marks a significant change in the danger, where the volume of snow above the weak layer is finally reaching the point of creating dangerous avalanches that are large enough to bury, injure, or kill a person.
Buried surface hoar is a notoriously delicate and dangerous weak layer. The resulting avalanches have the potential to propagate very quickly and often wider than one would expect. And when this weak layer is present, it is common to see avalanches triggered on steep slopes remotely from adjacent terrain features like ridgelines or flat runouts. This type of activity has recently been observed in some of our neighboring mountain ranges not far to the north and east of us. The main difference being that these places received more substantial snowfall this week sooner than our mountains.
Avoiding slopes steeper than 30 degrees, and giving yourself very wide margins regarding any steep terrain above you is the best way to safely manage this problem and reduce the risk of being involved in a dangerous slide. Slabs will be increasingly sensitive as you climb in elevation and where strong winds are drifting snow into and across leeward terrain.
3 days ago, an IPAC Field team encountered 8 inches of recent snow in the Upper Pack River. This new snow formed a soft slab above the 1/28 Surface Hoar.We believe the slab in this area to be more than a foot thick now, and capable of producing large dangerous avalanches on the fragile buried weak layer.
