Above 7,500 feet, skiers and riders could trigger small to large wind slabs in steep, wind-loaded terrain. These slabs, along with loose snow sluffs, have the potential to entrain significant amounts of snow on very steep, sustained slopes. Backcountry travelers might still be able to trigger large to very large persistent deep slab avalanches in some areas above 7,500 feet. Below 7,500 feet, the snowpack is mostly stable and significant avalanche activity is unlikely. To find safe, high quality skiing and riding, seek out low angle terrain that is sheltered from the wind. Otherwise, utilize a conservative approach to terrain management.

    Backcountry travelers might still be able to trigger persistent deep slab avalanches with depths up to five feet in some areas above 7,500 feet. These low probability/high consequence avalanches are more likely to be triggered where faceted snow from December resides less than three feet below the snow surface. Large triggers, such as snowmobiles or cornice failures, are more likely to be able to impact this deeply buried layer.

    Since Thursday afternoon, around 15 inches of snow has fallen in the mountains. Southerly to southwesterly ridgetop winds has accompanied this snowfall forming wind slabs in leeward terrain one to two feet in depth. Skiers and riders could trigger these slabs on steep, wind-loaded slopes above 7,500 feet. Snowfall during the day, along with increasing winds, will continue to add depth and volume to these slabs.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )The upper level low pressure system over the Pacific Northwest will move eastward and make its way over the region on Sunday, and moderate intensity snowfall will continue overnight and into tomorrow. Overnight lows in the mountains will be near 10 degrees before rising into the mid-teens in the afternoon. Southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds will decrease overnight before rising into the 20s during the day.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Considerable on Sunday in high elevation terrain. On steep, leeward slopes skiers and riders could trigger wind slabs 12 to 30 inches in depth with the Tetons being on the higher end of the scale. Backcountry travelers might still be able to trigger persistent deep slab avalanches in excess of five feet in some areas above 7,500 feet. Below 7,500 feet, the snowpack is mostly stable and significant avalanche activity is unlikely.
