Kernpunkte

You are not likely to trigger an avalanche today. The primary concern is dangerous riding conditions in all elevation bands where there is an unsupportable crust, rocks and vegetation. Exercise caution while you travel by being mindful of changing surfaces and areas with a thin snowpack.

Avalanche Discussion

Your odds of triggering an avalanche today are low. Lack of snowfall and high atmospheric pressure leaves us with a couple of hazards.

  1. Rock and woody debris near and below the snow surface. Get out your probe and measure snow depths along your route to identify areas of heightened risk.
  2. Unsupportable surfaces found at all elevation bands. Previous winds and above freezing temperatures are painting a mosaic of crusts and sastrugi on the slopes of Mount Shasta. Expect changing surfaces as you move through aspect and elevation. A slip and fall on firm snow could result in an uncontrollable slide into rocky terrain.

Consciously observing these risks will increase your margin of safety.
