Avalanche danger will increase throughout the day as warming temperatures and clear skies destabilizes recent snow on very steep slopes facing the sun. Larger avalanches will be possible on steeper, sustained slopes or around terrain traps that can entrain large amounts of snow. Seek colder, shaded terrain by the afternoon and evaluate snow stability on wind loaded slopes in the upper elevations.

    Clear skies and warm temperatures will destabilize 12-20 inches of recent snow on steep slopes facing the sun. These avalanches will be capable of entraining large amounts of snow as recent snow lies above slick melt freeze crusts. Large natural or human triggered D2 avalanches will be possible around terrain traps and large sustained slopes, and more likely around rock features that heat up surrounding snow surfaces. Pay attention to snow surfaces transitioning from dry to wet snow as a sign that the snow is becoming unstable. Small wet loose avalanches and rollerballs are clear signs of increasing instability.

    Recent snow combined with atypical northerly wind has formed slabs up to 18 inches deep on isolated slopes less commonly wind loaded. Look for signs of wind loaded slopes such as shooting cracks, stiffened surfaces, or large pillows. Triggering an avalanche will be most likely on steep, open and exposed terrain to the wind. The higher you climb in elevation, the higher the likelihood of finding unstable wind slabs. If skies clear and slopes receive direct sunlight, wind slabs could become more unstable and easier to trigger.

    This type of cracking on wind-loaded indicates unstable snow.

Storm Variation

The Salt River Range was favored by the storm yesterday where 48 hours totals ranged from 12-18 inches of snow. The Wyoming Range only received 2-3 inches. For this reason, the avalanche danger is Considerable for areas favored by the storm, primarily in the Salt River Range. The same avalanches problems exist across the whole zone, but larger and more consequential avalanches will exist where you encounter more recent snow.
