Kernpunkte

Strong northerly winds continue to transport new snow near and above treeline. Heightened avalanche conditions exist on southerly terrain, where slopes could be wind loaded or cross loaded with a foot or more of snow. Human triggered avalanches are possible. These avalanches could catch, carry you into unforgiving terrain, or bury you. Near and above treeline, assess avalanche terrain for signs of wind loading, especially on southerly aspects.

    Moderately sized wind slabs are possible today. Expect to find them near and above treeline, on leeward, southerly terrain. Strong to extreme winds have the potential to transport snow lower on slopes than normally expected. These strong winds could create scouring near the ridgeline on southerly terrain, with wind loading mid-slope and lower. Keep your eye out for signs of wind transported snow such as scoured patches, large wind drifts, and large new cornice growth.

Avalanche Discussion

High pressure continues to bring clear skies, warm temperatures, and northeasterly wind to the Mount Shasta area. If you choose to go near or above treeline, don't expect this nice weather at higher elevations. Strong to extreme winds will bring cold temperatures, difficult travel, and heightened avalanche danger. Climbing the mountain in the winter is a completely different beast. If you choose to climb, expect smooth, slick, icy surfaces that make self-arrest near impossible. Be prepared, know what you're getting into, remain flexible. Be willing to turn around.
