Kernpunkte

The avalanche hazard will peak Friday afternoon as a storm beginning Thursday night impacts Mt Hood. Watch for conditions changing throughout the day. Steer around slopes above 35 degrees where you find rapidly accumulating storm snow or wind deposited drifts. Fresh snow will accumulate above a firm old-snow surface which may provide a good sliding surface for avalanches on lee slopes and in steep wind-sheltered terrain.

    Careful route finding will be required if you plan to travel in wind-exposed terrain on Friday. Travel safely by choosing ridges and windward slopes. Take note of where winds are rapidly depositing recent snow. Look for blowing snow, cornice formation, and pillow-like drifts as evidence of where wind slabs will be forming. Textured and or firmer snow surfaces are another indication you are in wind affected terrain. Choose lee slopes below 35 degrees and away from cornices where you see signs of wind transport or where you experience cracks forming in the surface of the snow as you travel.

    In wind-sheltered areas, low-density snow will fall on a firm and smooth snow surface. Loose snow "sluffs" and low-density storm slabs will be possible on steep slopes and may easily entrain more snow as they slide. Evaluate the bond between the new snow and the old as you travel. Remember storm slabs are most likely during and just after periods of rapid accumulation which is forecast for Friday. Look for cohesive snow that is poorly bonded to the firmer snow below as a sign you could trigger a storm slab. Use inconsequential steep test slopes to check the bond of the new snow. Choose terrain below 35 degrees where you experience a poor bond or visual cracking as you travel.

Avalanche Discussion

Snow surfaces are generally firm around Mount Hood after a week of warm weather moistening the surface and refreezing. Incoming snow may bond poorly to the old surface, so use caution on steep slopes where 6" or more snow has accumulated whether by wind transport or heavy snowfall. Wind and precipitation are forecast all day and precip rates may even intensify in the afternoon, so stay alert to changing conditions throughout the day. A slope that you were comfortable with earlier in the day may not be in the same condition by the afternoon, so actively evaluate conditions all day.
