Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger.

As a consequence of a strong wind, further wind slabs will form in the course of the day. In particular on wind-loaded slopes the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. The fresh snow as well as the wind slabs are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack in particular on shady slopes. They can be released easily or naturally, in particular on extremely steep slopes. Mostly the avalanches are medium-sized and can be released by a single winter sport participant. Off-piste activities call for meticulous route selection. Caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. In particular very steep slopes and base of rock walls: As a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind medium-sized loose snow avalanches are possible. In particular on shady slopes these can be released in the faceted old snow.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 25 to 40 cm of snow has fallen since yesterday above approximately 2000 m. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2000 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. The rain gave rise on Thursday to moistening of the snowpack below approximately 1900 m. Below approximately 1700 m from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m a little snow is lying. Shady slopes: The snowpack consists of faceted crystals.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will persist. In some localities increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and strong wind.
