Kernpunkte

Snowpack modelling suggests a dangerous weak layer can be triggered.

Watch for whumpfing and signs of instability.

Lawinenprobleme

    • Unterhalb der Waldgrenze
    Wahrscheinlichkeit
    Unlikely - Possible
    Größe
    1–2.5

Strong southerly winds and soft surface snow have created wind slabs. Avoid wind loaded features.

  • Persistent Slabs

    • Unterhalb der Waldgrenze
    Wahrscheinlichkeit
    Possible - Likely
    Größe
    2–3

A dangerous weak layer of sugary facets is suspected around 50 cm deep, additionally, in areas with less than 120 cm of snow the base of the snowpack may be unstable.

Confidence

Low

  • Uncertainty is due to limitations in the field data.

Avalanche Summary

On Wednesday, a small natural wind slab occurred on a steep northeast aspect in the alpine.

No other avalanches have been reported since then, however, reports are very limited.

Snowpack Summary

15 cm of snow fell earlier in the week with warm temperatures and strong southerly winds. This likely sits on a layer of small facets. Lower elevations may have a crust on the surface.

Areas with less than 120 cm of snow may have a concerning weak layer at the base of the snowpack.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be aware of the potential for large avalanches due to buried weak layers.
  • If triggered, wind slabs avalanches may step down to deeper layers resulting in larger avalanches.
