Avalanche Activity

LO for 19/12. Avalanches likely mainly on W-N-NE aspects above 800m. Poor stability as rain arrives. Cornices! Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will initially be present in wind sheltered locations mainly on West through North to North-East aspects above 800 metres. There will be a period of reduced stability overnight and into the morning as the temperature rises and rain arrives when avalanches are likely. The snowpack will then start to slowly consolidate through the day. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: The freezing level will rise above the summits in the evening and remain there through the period. Mainly dry in the evening followed by rain to summit level. Strong South-East winds veering to become Southerly during the day. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry morning with strong South-East winds. Showers in the afternoon falling as snow above around 500 metres. The freezing level was around 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of poorly bonded windslab are present mainly on West through North to North-East aspects above 800 metres. There are fragile cornices mainly above these aspects. Windward slopes are scoured and generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
