Avalanche Activity

TOR for 9.1.22 Pockets of unstable windslab will persist on steep N to E aspects above 750 metres. Av Haz Mod.

Forecast Snow Stability: Isolated pockets of weakly bonded windslab will remain on steep North to East aspects where recent accumulations have gained depth, primarily above 750 metres with the tops of gullies most affected. Many exposed ridge lines are scoured. At lower levels the moist snowpack will refreeze. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be a cold night with moderate South-Westerly winds and snow flurries above 600 metres. From mid morning it will be dry as the winds decrease in strength and back progressively to the East by mid afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: A mild and overcast morning with heavy rain at valley level and heavy showers of wet snow above 900 metres. Around midday the freezing level rose close to the summits before falling to around 600 metres later in the day. A dry afternoon with moderate South-Westerly winds. ObservedSnowStability: Above 750 metres pockets of poorly bonded windslab persist in sheltered locations, primarily in the tops of gullies on North to East aspects where weaknesses in the snowpack were found during field observations. Cornices remain soft on these aspects. Many exposed ridges and West facing slopes are scoured. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
