LO for 16/3/24. Localised unstable windslab mainly on SW-W-N aspects above 1000m. Older snowpack stable. Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised areas of unstable windslab will persist mainly on South-West to North-West aspects above 1000 metres. North aspects will also be affected in the afternoon due to snow redistribution as the wind increases. Locations such as gullies, corrie rims and ridge flanks where windslab overlies the older snowpack will be most affected. The older snowpack will be well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will be generally dry. Fresh North-East winds will become light in the early morning, veering to the South- East and increasing to strong during the day. The freezing level will be around 700 metres overnight, rising to around summit level by the end of the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: There were occasional showers falling as snow above 600 metres. Moderate North-Easterly winds. The freezing level rose slowly through the day, to around 800 metres at midday. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of poorly bonded windslab are present with greatest accumulations on South-West to North-West aspects above 1000 metres. Locations where this overlies the existing snowpack rather than bare ground are particularly affected. The older snowpack is well bonded and stable and fresh snow deposits at lower elevations are not significant. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
