Avalanche Activity

Low danger. Pay close heed to local danger zones

Avalanche danger is generally low. Isolated danger zones prevail at high altitudes: older snowdrift accumulations which can trigger on steep slopes in extended eastern aspects, behind discontinuities and in gullies which can trigger small slab avalanches. Due to poor visibility and covering by some fresh snow, potential danger zones are difficult to recognize. The likelihood decrease as the day unfolds, limited to steep rocky terrain. On steep grass-covered slopes, isolated glide-snow avalanches are still possible.

Snowpack Structure

At night the snowpack can consolidate due to dropping temperatures. A few cm of fresh snow is possible, amid moderate wind impact. The old snowpack is compact, moist up to intermediate altitudes (rainfall, solar radiation) and is destabilizing further. The moist base tends towards gliding over smooth ground.

Weather Forecast

On Monday night the NW airstream will bring precipitation and a dropping snowfall level (to 1300-1600 m). By morning in the Dachstein region and Totes Gebirge, up to 15 cm of fresh snow is possible, more from place to place, less in Niedere Tauern. Further east and south, hardly any precipitation. In afternoon, clouds will disperse from the NW. At 2000 m: 0 to -3 degrees; at 1500 m: 0 to +4 degrees. The NW winds will be moderate, stronger only at summit levels.

Tendency

An intermediate high-pressure front will bring some sunshine on Wednesday, with milder temperatures. The danger of wet-snow/glide-snow avalanches will increase during the course of the day.
