Kernpunkte

The cooler weather and lack of sunshine over the past couple days has kept the spring snowpack mostly frozen and stable. The real question is… What did the new snow from yesterday do to the avalanche danger? Both the Silver Valley and the Selkirk/Cabinet zones received snow yesterday. Looking at the local weather stations, most mountain areas, in the forecast zones, received 6-12’’ of snow. Today, I’d expect to see some small (D1) avalanches near ridgelines especially on steep Leeward slopes (N-NE-E-SE). This problem can be avoided by staying away from windloaded open areas above treeline. Look for smaller slopes to play on today and get ready for more changing conditions soon. More snow later this week!

    New snow from the past 30 hours has potentially formed some new windslabs at high elevations. The windslabs could be cohesive enough to produce avalanches. Most of the new snow that fell around treeline isn't cohesive enough to produce slab avalanches. The windslabs to be concerned about will live just below the ridge tops and will be on the leeward side of the mountain. Looks for signs of blowing snow to clue you in to wind deposited areas. Fresh cornice growth is a good sign that wind slabs maybe on that particular slope.

    I don't anticipate Wet slabs being the problem today but the forecast is calling for sun so there's a possibility that Wet slabs become the problem. If the stable/frozen snowpack heats up today the conditions could change quickly. The best way to mitigate a Wet slab avalanche problem is to stay off of slopes in the direct sunshine. Slopes in the shade and protected by trees will heat up slower, so will be a safer place to be today. Enjoy the sunshine today but keep tabs on what it's doing to the snow surface. 

    While travelling up Tressle Ck last Satuarday we encountered a large avalanche that had crossed the road. The avalanche happened naturally on a south face during the warm spell on 3/18. (See the posted observation for more details)

Avalanche conditions can change quickly in the spring, so stay current with what to expect on a given day. It looks like more snow in the high country for the next couple days, which means the avalanche problem will mostly be old snow/new snow interface.
