Shallow pockets of windslab may be found in the alpine, but a few inches of new snow probably won't increase avalanche danger much.  Conditions could be challenging with a refrozen, and sometimes breakable crust in many areas. Expect early season hazards due to shallow snow cover at lower elevations.

    There may be enough new snow and wind to create pockets of shallow windslab near the crest. If you find more than 6" of new snow, and signs of wind drifting, be careful of entering steep slopes with consequences. Wind slabs could be reactive, as they may not bond very well with a refrozen crust underneath. If you find signs of instability, such as shooting cracks in firm or cohesive snow, those are further clues to stay off consequential steeps. The most likely areas to find shallow slabs will be in the high alpine, near ridgelines and cornice features.

    Small loose dry avalanches could become possible on steep slopes, especially under large terrain features such as rock faces and gully systems. Keep an eye out for these if snowfall rates pick up.

Avalanche Discussion

Not much precipitation is forecast, but with cold temperatures there is uncertainty whether it will end up being only an inch or two, or six inches. As such, take into account the amount of new snow that you find. On Wednesday, an observer found a thick freezing rain crust near and east of the hairpin on Hwy 20, but not west of the there. Instead, he found a handful of inches of new snow on the west side. A round of small loose wet avalanches occurred sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, and heavy wet and unsupportable conditions were found below 5,500ft. Expect challenging and tricky travel conditions where this crust exists, as it may be icy and/or breakable. The snowpack remains shallow especially at lower elevations, and early season hazards such as downed trees, rocks and creeks are plentiful. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources. Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
