As avalanche and weather conditions begin to settle down, continue to approach steeper slopes with caution. Look for evidence of wind-affected snow where you find it, triggering a wind slab is still possible on slopes steeper than 35 degrees. As temps warm Monday, choose lower angle and shadier slope to avoid triggering wet loose avalanches.

    Extreme winds and significant new snow over the last few days have built large wind slabs. While these slabs are beginning to heal, it will still be possible to trigger a slab on wind drifted slopes. Look for recent cornices, stiff and textured snow surfaces. Where you see these things, choose slopes below 35 degrees. Winds have been strong enough to create wind slabs in unusual locations and below treeline, so pay attention to the snow surface for clues about where they might exist. Shooting cracks in the snow are a sure sign that you could trigger a wind slab.

    Temperatures will rise across the region Monday and increase the likelihood for loose wet avalanche activity especially in areas that did not see loose wet activity on Sunday. Use clues such as rising temps, sunny skies, and water and snow shedding from trees as your first clue that loose wet avalanches may be following. While we expect these slides to remain isolated to very steep slopes, they could entrain snow and grow larger. If you see these clues, choose lower-angle terrain and shadier slopes. Use extra caution above terrain traps like cliffs and creeks.

Avalanche Discussion

A number of natural and human-triggered avalanches occurred over the weekend highlighting the fact that the snowpack is still adjusting to the major storm cycle that we are exiting. Warmer temperatures Monday should help stabilize things, but may also be a trigger for cornice failures and lingering wind slabs. Approach slopes over 35 degrees with caution. A freezing rain crust formed last Monday up to roughly 7000'. We have received about 50" of snow since then! Strong to extreme winds and cool temps have been the norm building slabs and producing avalanches. The snowpack is healing from a non-stop week of wind and snow. Be cautious in wind effected terrain at higher elevations and consider how the recent snow is bonded before committing to steep slopes in wind-sheltered areas.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
