Here are the red flags that I've noticed over the last 24 hours:

Natural avalanche activity

Cracking and collapsing

Heavy snowfall containing high water content

Wind drifted snow

Poor snowpack structure

All of this information is bullseye clues of avalanche danger. There is some instability within the new snow but, by far, the biggest threat is avalanches breaking into the sugary faceted Persistent Weak Layer that formed in November and is now deeply buried. Riders in Ephraim Canyon Saturday reported lots of whumpfing and a slope that cracked out on them but didn't slide. My partner and I got a test slope to fail and crack into the deep weak layer. More snow is going to stack up on top of this weak layer today. All of this information should make it obvious that we are dealing with dangerous avalanche conditions right now.

Avalanche Warning

* WHAT...The avalanche danger is HIGH across northern, central, and southwest Utah. The danger has reached EXTREME in some parts of the Provo area mountains.

* WHERE...For most mountains in Utah and southeast Idaho, including the Wasatch Range, Bear River Range, Uinta Range, Manti-Skyline, Fish Lake Region, Pavant Range, Tushar Range, and Cedar City area mountains.

* WHEN...In effect from 6AM MST this morning to 6AM MST Monday

* IMPACTS...Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Natural and human triggered avalanches are likely on many slopes and may be triggered at a distance. Stay off of and out from under slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

Recent Activity

There was some natural storm slab avalanche activity in Huntington Canyon involving the new snow. Slabs were 8 to 10 inches deep. There was one very small pocket that broke into the sugary faceted layer from November.

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: This has been an odd storm. Temperatures have remained warm with most stations staying steady at about 30˚F in the higher elevations. The new snow is paste. Super high density. Not the Utah powder we're used to. Snow totals vary from the northern Skyline to the Southern Skyline. The Fairview Lakes zone has done the best with a solid 2 feet since Friday. The southern end is in the 8 inch range since Friday. Southwest wind has been moderate in speed with some stronger gusts along the more exposed terrain.

Mountain Weather: It's currently lightly snowing this morning as of 7am. We should have a bit of a lull this morning then snowfall should pick up around noon and last into tonight with another 6 to 12 inches possible. Temperatures are going to cool so the last snowfall from this storm should be the normal powder we like. The wind will be light to moderate in speed. It will be from the south and gradually shifting from the southeast. This flow may favor canyons on the east side of the Manti Skyline like Ferron Canyon. The storm will end early Monday morning.
