    Today is the warmest day of the week. This minor avalanche problem is isolated to steep, wind-sheltered, southerly aspects that receive direct sunlight, near and below treeline. The greatest risk is being swept off your feet and flushed through terrain hazards. Stay alert for wet snow surfaces underfoot. Point releases and roller balls are mother natures warning signs.

Avalanche Discussion

High pressure dominates, leading to deteriorating fresh powder skiing. Snow surfaces are a typical Shasta smorgasbord—check our recent observations and photos for updates. Today is the warmest day of the week, with a cooling trend and northerly winds expected into the weekend.

The snowpack is solid: 90 inches at Old Ski Bowl, 65 inches at Castle Lake, and 62 inches in the Eddy Mountains. Everitt Memorial Highway is open, but Castle Lake Road remains closed. For motorized recreation, head to Pilgrim Creek Sno-Park or Bunny Flat, and remember to respect riding boundaries -- ignorance of the law is no excuse. 

 With this stretch of beautiful weather, we imagine a few climbers might be tempted to tackle the ol' Shasta Horn. While we wholeheartedly encourage grand adventures, we also want to ensure you're equipped with the knowledge needed for a safe ascent.

Climbing Mount Shasta in winter significantly ups the ante. The mountain reveals its sharper teeth this time of year, with shorter days, colder temperatures, strong winds, bitter wind chills, slick and icy surfaces, and potential avalanche danger. These are critical factors to consider and prepare for.

Take it one step at a time. Flexibility is one of the most valuable skills in the mountains. Be honest about your abilities, as well as your group's, and be prepared to adjust your plans as needed. Stay alert—don’t climb with your head down. Keep your chin up, observe your surroundings, and trust what both Mother Nature and your instincts are telling you.
