Kernpunkte

A variety of wind slabs trending towards unlikely, but not impossible, for you to trigger exist above treeline. Where not wind affected, our middle and upper elevation terrain holds about 8 inches of snow above last week’s stout rain crust. Dry loose avalanches are possible for you to initiate on steep, northerly aspects where this surface snow tends to lack cohesion. Watch for signs of these avoidable avalanche problems on isolated terrain features. Avalanches are unlikely in most of our terrain today. Anticipate a rise in avalanche danger on Sunday with heavy snowfall predicted to impact the area.

    Southwest wind today may add some new and small wind slabs to the existing collection of stubborn wind slabs above treeline. Wind blowing from essentially every direction this week created slabs on many aspects. Unstable pockets may still exist, especially anywhere you observe wind deposition today. These slabs all sit on our prominent crust which should help you gauge their thickness. You can avoid this avalanche problem by choosing terrain that’s scoured to the crust or less than 35 degrees above treeline, or by seeking wind sheltered terrain.

    Snow above last week’s rain crust tends to lack cohesion where not wind or sun affected. This loose snow, most likely found on northerly aspects, makes it easy to initiate sluffing in our steepest terrain. These dry loose avalanches could knock you off your feet. While unlikely to bury a person, a small sluff could pull you in an unwanted direct or cause a sliding fall on the slick, icy surface. Consider potential hazards in the fall line before committing to steep slopes with loose snow.

Avalanche Discussion

Snow fallen since last week’s rain event has been subject to cold temperatures, wind, and sun. Cold, dry, and soft snow can be found if you avoid the wind affected high elevation terrain and sun crusted southerly aspects. This snow all sits on a generally supportable rain crust that varies from a few inches to nearly a foot thick. Weak layers exist under the crust, but they are very unlikely to produce avalanches while this robust crust remains frozen.

Snow above the crust exhibits some sugary facets, a typically loose character, and poor bonding to the crust. These conditions vary across our terrain and while not a concern now, could result in a poor structure of a weak layer over a hard, slick bed surface once new snow is piled on top. Look for significant snow with exactly this potential arriving Saturday night and continuing through Tuesday.
