You're most likely to trigger a wet avalanche on steep, sun-exposed slopes in the heat of the day. As temperatures climb, shift your aspect to the shadier side, and look for firmer, more supportive snow.

    An overnight refreeze will make this problem harder to come by, but not impossible. Early in the morning, it should be minimal to nonexistent, but as the day warms, steep, sunny slopes will soften and may become unstable. Use the snow underfoot and the weather overhead as your canary in the coal mine.

    If you find yourself sinking into deep, wet snow, or if the sun has been downright blasting all day, it’s probably time to move to shadier slopes and firmer snow. Keep in mind that rapid warming can happen quicker in areas with less wind for cooling, and above the inversion, which has been sitting around 4,500'.

Avalanche Discussion

Unusually warm weather continued to dominate in Snoqualmie Pass on Thursday. Alpental summit reached 50°F for a couple of hours, while the valley bottom stayed in the 30s. A moderate to strong east wind blew through the Pass, keeping low elevations cool and maintaining low-level clouds near and east of the crest. A slight radiative refreeze overnight allowed for surfaces to firm up and slow the continual warming of the snowpack. A party in the Chair Peak area reported firm surfaces on northerly aspects, and over a foot of boot penetrable snow on sunny slopes.

In general, the surface snow consists of large, loose, wet meltform grains, on top of a thick, burly crust below. We don't anticipate any avalanche to fail below this crust, keeping the size potential fairly small. That being said, this kind of warmth is unusual for this time of year. Anytime conditions are out of the ordinary, it’s worth keeping your guard up.

There hasn’t been any reported new avalanche activity across Snoqualmie Pass in the past couple of days, but warm weather continues, and mid to upper elevations haven’t dipped below freezing in days. Keep an eye out for extra soft and mushy surface snow, where triggering an avalanche is most likely. Rocky terrain also still has the potential to shed hanging snow, so limit your time spent underneath steep, rocky features.
