On Tuesday the avalanche danger and avalanche problems will be the same as we experienced on Monday.  Abnormally warm weather and clear skies mean that Wet Loose avalanches will be likely, particularly on steep south slopes which will heat up the most.  Today I could see debris from Wet Loose avalanches on Mt Washington and near the Thayer Glacier on North Sister.  Cornice Collapses will continue to be possible, so giving cornices extra room is a wise idea.

    Wet Loose avalanches have been observed on sunny slopes throughout the terrain.  The best strategy for finding safe and fun riding is to time your tour accordingly and consider which aspects are heating up when.  Avalanche danger will be Low in the morning and rise to Moderate as the day warms.  If you are planning on traveling on east or south slopes, plan your riding for earlier in the day before they heat up too much and could become dangerous.  Signs that Wet Loose avalanches could be problematic include:  natural Wet Loose avalanches in the steepest terrain and emanating from trees, rock or cliff bands, as well as melting slushy snow that is becoming deeper than several inches.  If you are seeing these signs it is time to avoid steep slopes or move to cooler aspects.

    If you are taking advantage of the more predictable hazard and fair weather to travel on large steep slopes, remember that Wet Loose avalanches can be surprisingly forceful and could have greater consequences in very steep terrain, or if terrain traps are present.

    Unusually warm daytime temperatures, clear sunny skies, and superficial refreezes overnight combine to melt snow and weaken cornices.  I am giving large cornices an extra margin of safety; I'm staying further back from them when I'm on ridgetops, keeping my skin tracks out from under them, and generally spending less time exposed to a possible Cornice Collapse.

Avalanche Discussion

It has been hot out there!  Our Moon Mountain Weather station which is at 7450 ft. recorded several hours of 50 F or more today.  The sun is also strong this time of year.  Our snowpack has been feeling the heat, and looking out at the nountains from afar, they are looking pretty shiny mid-day.  Most slopes have experienced several cycles of melt-freeze.  Only the shadiest north slopes are still miraculously holding some dry snow.  Tuesday will provide at least one more day of spring riding (avoiding Wet Loose avalanches and sticky snow, and hunting for good corn snow) before cooler less settled weather moves in.
