Kernpunkte

A cold, shallow, and layered snowpack in the East South will not respond well to the first significant rain event. Avalanches could be large and entrain most or all of the snowpack in some areas. Avoid all open slopes where avalanches can start, stop, or run.

    Similar layered snowpacks around Paradise and Mt. Hood witnessed large wet slab activity on Friday with heavy rainfall. Around 0.75" of rainfall will arrive in the East South where the snowpack structure is likely much weaker, through Saturday. While a round of wet loose avalanches may coincide with the onset of rainfall, wet slabs could fail hours or even several days after the heavier rain starts entering the snowpack. This uncertainty mandates an extra margin of safety. Any large avalanche will be consequential as it will rake you through shallowly buried rocks, stumps, or trees. Give the snowpack the time it needs to adjust to a wet and warmer weather regime and avoid all open slopes steeper than 30 degrees on Saturday.

Avalanche Discussion

The entrenched cold air has been overwhelmed by over-running warm air at mid and upper elevations. While lower elevations may have a layer of freezing rain. By Saturday when a frontal system swings through with increasing winds, further warming, and moderate precipitation, this will be a primarily rain event.

There are limited current observations across the east-south. The media gallery provides a glimpse of what the snowpack might look like. Adjacent zones have complicated snowpacks, some with multiple persistent weak layers. There may be similar snowpack structures in the East South.

If you do head out into non-avalanche terrain, remember to dress with waterproof layers.
