At the mid and upper elevations, backcountry travelers could trigger pockets of soft slab up to 18 inches in depth in very steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain. The snowpack is mostly stable at the lower elevations and avalanches unlikely.
Avalanche Discussion
Snowfall is expected to continue overnight before tapering off Tuesday morning. Overnight lows in the mountains will be in the mid teens before rising into the mid 20s during the day. Ridgetop winds will veer to the west at 10 to 20 miles per hour. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE above an elevation of 8,000 feet on Sunday. There, backcountry travelers could trigger pockets of soft slab up to 18 inches deep in very steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain. The potential persists, particularly in the Southwest Trails and Togwotee Pass areas, for snowmobiles or other large loads to trigger hard slabs up to three feet deep running on or below the strong early season crust.
