At the mid and upper elevations, dense surface slabs were formed by strong southwest winds on Sunday. Backcountry travelers could trigger these slabs, one to two feet deep, in steep, wind-loaded avalanche terrain. On sun-affected aspects, any extended periods of sunshine will make these slabs more susceptible to failure along with the chance of loose snow sluffs. If clear skies prevail, shallow wet slides could also occur in the afternoon on lower elevation, sunlit slopes with an underlying snowpack.

Light snow showers are expected to develop early Tuesday morning and continue through the day resulting in four to six inches of new snow in the mountains by Tuesday evening. There, overnight temperatures will be in the low teens before rising to into the low 20s on Tuesday. The valleys will cool into the mid teens and then rise to near freezing during the day. Ridgetop winds will back to the west at 10 to 20 miles per hour.On Tuesday, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate above 9,000 feet, where recent snowfall and strong southwest winds have formed dense surface slabs near ridgelines. Backcountry travelers could trigger these slabs, up to eighteen inches deep, in steep, wind loaded avalanche terrain. With the exception of isolated pockets of shallow slab in very steep avalanche starting zones and cliff areas, the snowpack is mostly stable below 9,000 feet.
