Dangerous, unstable slabs, two to three feet in depth, rest upon a base of weak, faceted snow on a variety of aspects at the upper elevations and on shaded aspects at the mid elevations. New snow and strong southwest winds will increase the load on these slabs, increasing their depth and susceptibility to failure, either on approach or after a slope has been crossed several times. Yesterday, a skier triggered a two foot deep hard slab on a west facing slope off of the backside of Glory at an elevation around 8,000 feet. New, shallow wind slabs will also build on leeward slopes as the day progresses.
Avalanche Discussion
Light, scattered snow showers may linger Monday night and into Tuesday, but significant accumulations are not expected. Mountain temperatures will remain near 20 and ridgetop winds will back to the south at 10 to 20 miles per hour.In western Wyoming, the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE above 8,000 feet on Tuesday. Backcountry riders and skiers could trigger surface slabs two to three feet in depth in steep terrain where early season snow persisted.
