Avalanche Activity

Storm - fresh snowdrift accumulations

Avalanche danger is low. Isolated danger zones lie in extended eastern aspects. Snowdrift patches can be easily triggered, but releases will reach maximum magnitude 2.

Snowpack Structure

The snowpack has been able to settle well, the stormy NW winds are transporting snow onto a hardened old snowpack surface. The snowdrift patches have poor bonding to the old snowpack. As temperatures drop, it freezes at intermediate altitudes. In the Graz mountains there is little snow on the ground.

Weather Synopsis

On Sunday in the rimline ranges, still sunny to start with, elsewhere the peaks will be shrouded in heavy cloud. The snowfall will extend by evening along the northern flank of the Alps, winds will be brisk from NW. At 2000 m: -5 degrees.

Tendency

On Monday the summits of Styria’s mountains will be veiled in heavy cloud, intermittent sunshine, even moments of cloudless skies. Winds will shift to westerly, brisk in ridgeline terrain and on the peaks. Much milder at all altitudes. At 2000 m: +6 degrees. Caution: daytime danger cycle for avalanches.
