Weather Forecast

During the nocturnal hours, mostly in Tauern and Nockberge, fresh snowfall above 1200m: 10-20cm until after midnight. Then, conditions will diry and clouds will disperse. At 2000m: -4 degrees at night; at 3000m: -10 degrees. On Wednesday, visibility is good, sunshine frequent, clouds dispersed. Residual fog will disturb only for a short time in ascent zones. It will remain dry. At 2000m: -3 degrees; at 3000m: -10 degrees. Winds will be light, moderate southerly foehn wind will arise in the Tauern in the evening.

Avalanche Activity

Huge restraint imperative regionally in winter sports due to the avalanche situation

Avalanche danger above 1600m is considerable, below that altitude danger is low. Avalanches can in some places be triggered even by one sole skier, esp. on north-facing slopes they can grow to large size. Also naturally triggered avalanches and remote triggerings can be expected. Danger zones are almost impossible to recognize. Whumpf noises and cracks when you tread upon the snowpack, as well as fresh avalanche releases, are alarm signals and indicate imminent danger. Size and frequency of danger zones tend to increase with ascending altitude.

Snowpack Structure

The 30-50cm of fresh fallen snow was transported far-reachingly, was deposited esp. on shady slopes atop an unfavorable old snowpack. Weak laysers occur both in transitions from fresh snow and drifts to the old snow, as well as inside the old snowpack. On very steep grass-covered slopes the entire snowpack can glide away.
