Kernpunkte

There is a chance of triggering a large slab avalanche near the ground on a weak layer of snow. In upper elevations, small wind slabs may be easy to trigger from strong southeast winds. Traveling on steep wind loaded slopes is our main concern so identifying where these conditions exist and steering clear of them is recommended. There is also a small chance that glide cracks will release so avoid spending time under them whenever possible.

There is a weak layer near the ground that was responsible for large avalanches in early December. While we believe it is healing, it is our main concern because we are not sure how easy it will be for a human to trigger. This weak layer can be found at mid and upper elevations and may be easier to trigger on wind loaded slopes where small wind slabs are forming today from strong east winds.

That being said, both persistent avalanches and wind slabs are a concern in Summit Lake.

Wind slabs may feel stiff as you travel over them and there may be shooting cracks underneath you. Slopes where a slab avalanche is possible may have clues such as whumpfing sounds and collapsing. The most concerning situation is where there is evidence of wind slabs AND weak snow. These clues can help to make informed decisions about whether or not to ease into steep terrain today. The safest option is to choose slopes that are not wind loaded.

Glide avalanche activity has slowed down in Summit Lake. That being said, if glide cracks release they can be dangerous. Be on the lookout for them as you travel and minimize or avoid spending time under them.
