Friday- Saturday's warm coastal storm is accumulating 12-15" of snow, while reactive wind slabs in exposed alpine areas are forming from moderate switching winds.  Avoid slopes greater than 30 degrees, run outs, and leeward, wind loaded slopes. Travel with wide margins and allow ample time for the new snow to bond and settle before venturing to more complex terrain.

    The storm ended warm with rain for a few hours that will form a thin crust on the surface.  Warmer temps will drive settlement but also add more stress on colder/low dense layer of  snow from a quick and cold  6-8" storm on 12/27.  Around 2' of new storm snow is resting on this layer and could be possible for human triggered avalanches. These instabilities can last between a few hours and a few days and are distributed widely across terrain receiving similar snowfall amounts. Avoid terrain traps and overhead exposure, travel one at a time through complex terrain while maintaining eyes on.  Wind slabs from the switching NW to SE winds could still be reactive as well.

     

Avalanche Discussion

With snowfall increasing again, it's a good time to reset your mindset and look at the surface snow with new eyes. Pay attention to tempuratures. Warmer temps will create an upside-down structure in the new snow (weak underneath, coehisive on top) and human triggered surface avalanches will be possible.

Deeper down, a few melt-freeze layers are present throughout the snowpack at all elevations and aspects. These layers have mostly been found to be healing but could fail and produce an unlikely though larger avalanche. Our overall warmer and wetter temperature regime this season has helped slow the development of persistent weak layers (PWL's) in the snowpack. However at higher elevations and further inland these grain types can exist, and will require continued assessment.

The people you go out with, the way you communicate, and the way you practice risk reduction as a team throughout the day is equally important as the conditions.

Help us gather information about weather, snowpack, and avalanche activity by reading and submitting field observations. Useful observations can be anonymous and include: 

  • Natural or human-triggered avalanche activity
  • Signs of instability: Cracking, collapsing, or whumphing
  • Red Flag Weather: Precipitation, wind loading, warming temperatures and rain-on-snow
  • Surface hoar growth, snow depth, persistent weak layers, etc
  • Snow stability tests, or pit result and location, elevation, aspect, etc
