Kernpunkte

Look for and assess pockets of wind drifted snow at upper elevations. The likelihood of triggering a slab avalanche is low. Getting caught in one could still have a bad outcome in terrain where you could get swept down a steep face, off a cliff, or into trees.

    There isn’t much older snow to drift with moderate winds, but an inch or two of new snow could create pockets of fresh slab in the most wind exposed areas near the Cascade Crest. You are most likely to find wind slabs in alpine terrain features like steep slopes below corniced ridges, the base of cliffs, confined chutes, and gully walls. Smooth, deeper patches of fresh snow are probably wind slab. As usual small avalanches can have big consequences in extreme or otherwise consequential terrain. 

    Small wind loaded features at ridgeline can serve as test slopes to gauge the reactivity of fresh wind slabs.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent warm temperatures and sunshine melted the snow surface, especially on slopes that face the sun. Wet snow has since refrozen and makes for challenging travel conditions. Prepare to encounter slick melt-freeze crusts and frozen "chunder" under the forest canopy.

The MLK crust remains a prominent marker in the upper snowpack. Last Wednesday, NWAC forecaster Joe Dellaporta found this layer 1-2' below the snow surface. While some weak snow is associated with the crust, snowpack tests where they traveled did not produce propagating test results. The weakest snow associated with this interface (rounding facets)was on shaded aspects (NW-N-NE) above 6500 ft.
