Wet snow avalanches will become possible mid-day on steep slopes that face the sun.  Carefully evaluate very steep terrain for signs of heating and move to shaded slopes when snow surfaces grow wet. Cornices continue to bake in the sun so limit your time beneath them.

    Mostly sunny conditions and mild temperatures will again make surfaces prone to wet loose snow avalanches on very steep south-facing slopes. These wet slides could entrain enough snow to knock you off your feet or drag you into a terrain trap and may grow large enough to bury a person in some areas. Growing cloud cover and breezy conditions will be the wild card for potential wet avalanche activity today so monitor these factors closely. Sinking deeply into wet unconsolidated snow or natural loose snow slides are signs that the snowpack is becoming unstable.

    Cornices are large and could fail during the heat of the day. Don't linger beneath them and remember that they can break a surprising distance from the edge. Warm weather and the weakening, undermined snow that it brings can cause a variety of hazards.

    A recent skier triggered wet loose avalanche in the Snake River Canyon. Avalanches like this may become possible later today on very steep, south facing slopes if conditions remain sunny.

    Stubborn wind slabs up to a foot deep exist in isolated terrain features at the upper elevations.   These slabs will be stubborn given the time since the last storm and the recent wind-packing velocities, but triggering remains possible in very steep starting zones above 9,000’.  Keep an eye out on very steep slopes with signs of wind loading such as dense drifts or hollow sounding snow.

Avalanche Discussion

Yesterday brought another day of settlement to the snowpack in shady areas where wind slabs grew several days ago. Clear conditions last night allowed for somwhting of a refreeze but morning temps seem pretty warm. Currently there is a high thin cloud cover which may increase temperatures through a greenhousing  effect befiore the clouds grow thick enough to casst deeper shade. Conditions can change rapidly due to this variable cloud cover and moderate wind forecast  be prepared for warmer condtions than you might expect. Conversely, these same mushy slopes may grow icy when clouds thicken, potentially making the same slopes icy.
