Kernpunkte

Avalanche danger will trend downwards on Wednesday, but Wind Slab avalanches will remain possible.  Wind Slab avalanches are most likely near treeline and at alpine elevations and directly beneath ridgelines where wind blown snow can accumulate.  Make sure you know where the wind has blown the most recent snow, and how deep those wind deposits are, before riding steep slopes up high.

Wind Slab avalanches were observed on Tuesday, like the one in the East bowl of Tumalo Butte.  By the afternoon, winds had shifted to the Northwest and were reverse loading slopes.  Wind Slab avalanches will be less likely on Wednesday and most will be small, but they may show up in unusual places.  Evaluate where the wind has been moving snow most recently, and how reactive these new wind slabs are before committing to steep slopes that look soft near treeline and at alpine elevations,

Avalanche Discussion

What a wonderful April Fool's surprise it was to find 15 cm. of very light snow in the mountains this morning!  While the riding was wonderful, it did produce many small avalanches.  In addition to the observation from Tumalo Butte I saw many shallow Storm Slabs at Tam rim.  Nearly everything that was 35 degrees or steeper had avalanched.  The crowns were very long, but none of the slides were big enough to have harmed a rider.

These Storm Slabs will likely be a thing of the past.  As mentioned, Wind Slabs will linger, and new ones may form on any aspect near treeline and in the alpine.  As the sun pokes through on Wednesday, we may even see some small wet snow instabilities.  Because I expect them to be limited and minor, I am not forecasting a Wet avalanche problem.
