Snowpack

With moderate to strong southeasterly winds, the last three days saw mostly small, but nonetheless occasionally triggerable snowdrift accumulations develop especially in the western Lower Valais, on the northern flank of the Alps and on the central part of the main Alpine ridge. In addition, on the northern Alpine ridge, near-surface weak layers are in rare cases still prone to triggering, especially on wind-protected shady slopes. Otherwise, the snowpack is mostly well consolidated in these regions.

In southern Valais, Ticino and Grisons, soft, faceted layers make the snowpack structure less favourable. However, on shady slopes the overlying layers are either soft or very hard due to the effect of the wind and are thus now only likely to propagate fractures in isolated cases.

Gliding avalanche activity is gradually increasing with the mild weather.

Outlook

Wednesday and Thursday will be mostly sunny and mild in the mountains. The zero-degree level will be around 2400 m in the north and around 2000 m in the south. On Wednesday there will be light winds, while on Thursday there will be a moderate southerly wind, strong at high altitudes. There will be a moderate foehn wind in the valleys of the north.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease on Wednesday. On Thursday, mostly small snowdrift accumulations will develop in the north with the foehn winds. Gliding avalanche activity will gradually increase slightly.
