Danger of falls due to small snowdrift patches

Avalanche danger above 2000 m is moderate, below that altitude danger is low. Snowdrifts are the main problem. One sole person can trigger an avalanches in steep ridgeline terrain in NW/N/SE aspects and in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. Slab avalanches can reach medium size. At intermediate altitudes, in addition, wet-snow is problematic. On steep slopes which have not yet discharged, isolated wet loose-snow avalanches and glide-snow avalanches can trigger. Glide-cracks are indicators of imminent danger. Avalanches of large size cannot be ruled out.

During the partially clear night on Saturday the snowpack will be able to consolidate. It is thoroughly wet down to ground level but low in tensions. At high altitudes a melt-freeze crust will form, some fresh snow will be deposited atop of that. Below 1500m, also on shady slopes, there is hardly any snow on the ground.

Fresh snow and drifts will ratchet up avalanche danger at the start of the new week.
