Kernpunkte

A thick and cohesive slab resting on a weak layer of facets and depth hoar will be your primary concern on Tuesday. Slabs will be resistant to human triggers but very destructive if you are unlucky enough to find the weak spot. Avoid riding in steep and open terrain above treeline. As the week progresses expect fresh snowfall to bond poorly to the existing snowpack in steep terrain, storm slabs and sloughing will be easily triggered starting Wednesday.

    Our primary weak layer varies in depth depending on which aspect you are on and which mountain range you choose to play in. This layer consists of facets and depth hoar resting on a firm base of snow that dates back to November. In the Eastern Cabinets we are seeing this layer 2-3 feet below the surface and failing with hard force. In the Western Cabinets this layer is likely to be buried a little deeper and less likely to trigger, in the Purcells it will be much closer to the surface and more prone to triggering. I would advise avoiding terrain that is steeper than 35 degrees and open, thin rocky areas and convex rolls will be likely trigger points. Avalanche Discussion

Todays tour revealed that the last few small storms that rolled through the area have left us with some decent riding and an upper surface snowpack that is well settled and bonded. Wind slabs are still there and easy to spot; but, I was unable to get any reaction out of them so I am taking them off the list of going concerns. The most interesting observation is the abundance of surface hoar growing out there at tree-line and below on all aspects. Surface hoar crystals were found ranging from 1-3 cm tall (see photo below). This will set us up for an increase in hazard later in the week as these pretty little feathers get buried in the next storm. I would anticipate some very touchy conditions after Wednesday depending on the amount and density of our next snowfall. The weather forecast is predicting multiple shots of snow starting Wednesday morning. These weather systems will be a nice addition to our snowpack; but, we have a poor bonding surface at all elevations. I would start to think about dialing back terrain choices starting Wednesday. With a layer of surface hoar growing below treeline and some pretty slick crusts above treeline I anticipate that storm slabs will be your primary concern from midweek through the weekend.
