Shallow, recently-formed wind slabs are possible to trigger on lee slopes near ridgelines, but your attention should be equally trained on the possibility of dangerous deep slab avalanches that still linger. Travel conservatively by limiting your exposure to large avalanche paths. This includes both upper elevation open slopes where avalanches may initiate, and also lower elevation terrain where large avalanches may reach. High above you, a small wind slab could step down and become a larger and more destructive slide.

Very large, deep slab avalanches were reported last Friday through Monday in the southern and central Cascades. Some of these monsters released naturally several days after the most recent significant winter storm. Most recently and closest to the East South zone, a large to very large avalanche naturally released on Spiral Butte, just east of White Pass Monday (3/1). Very large deep slab avalanches (D3-D3.5) released naturally in the Crystal Mt backcountry last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. These avalanches are large enough that it would be difficult to survive if you were caught in a similar slide.
Treat this ongoing avalanche cycle with respect. Deep persistent slabs are a low-likelihood, high consequence gamble that has professionals and experienced backcountry travelers alike on edge throughout the region. It's been several days since the last report of a deep slab avalanche, but with limited information and the devastating consequences of these deep slabs, we continue to keep them in the forecast. Limit your exposure to large avalanche paths, sticking to simpler terrain such as smaller slopes or tree-covered terrain that does not have open slopes above it. Do not linger below large avalanche paths.
Peaks closer to the Cascade crest picked up a few inches of fresh snow driven by steady west winds. Expect to find small fresh wind slabs and cornices on lee slopes near ridge crests. Where you find blowing snow and firm or textured snow surfaces you may find a wind slab or sensitive cornice. Steer around steep features where you find these clues.
Friday brought cooler temperatures which likely helped to stabilize cornices and surface snow. Sun breaks are less likely Sunday than they were yesterday, but may still be possible. There is not enough recent snow to create a significant loose wet avalanche problem, but on steep, sunny slopes roller balls may have enough force to knock you over, so be cautious around terrain traps like cliffs and creeks if the sun is out.

Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources. Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
