Kernpunkte

In steep, leeward terrain at the higher elevations, backcountry travelers could trigger small to large pockets of soft slab which reside above hard sliding surfaces and weak faceted snow. Loose snow sluffs will also be possible down into the mid elevations. At the lower elevations, the snowpack is mostly stable. Obstacles that emerged during the last dry period are likely hidden, and early season hazards continue.

    Since Friday, most of the Tetons have received between 9 and 12 inches of light snow with localized areas up to 18 inches on the west slope. Light to moderate southwesterly to northwesterly ridgetop winds accompanied this snowfall, and soft slabs have formed in leeward terrain near ridgelines above 9,000 feet. Below this snowfall, sun crusts and faceted snow provide good sliding surfaces and weak layers. Skiers and riders venturing into steep, avalanche prone terrain could trigger these slabs with depths ranging from 6 to 18 inches.

Avalanche Discussion

Skies are to clear overnight and be followed by increasing clouds on Tuesday morning with a chance of light snow returning by evening. Temperatures are to be similar to today’s, starting in the single digits and rising to the teens. Northwest winds are to become westerly with 10-20 mph averages before increasing in the later part of the day.The general avalanche hazard will be Low. Low hazard does not mean no hazard. The chance for humans to trigger small avalanches will still exist on isolated terrain features and in extreme terrain. Even small slides can carry someone where they don’t want to go and the shallow snowpack has many dangerous obstacles that are not yet covered.
