Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will exist in wind sheltered locations mainly above 850 metres, areas most affected will be sheltered gullies and slopes with a North through East to South-Easterly aspect, fragile cornices will exist above these areas. Elsewhere many windward slopes have been heavily scoured and will be firm, icy and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Mainly dry and cold conditions will affect the area overnight and on Thursday morning, it will become less cold with light snow later in the day when the freezing level will rise to around 1000 metres. Winds will be generally fresh Westerly for much of the period but decreasing moderate and backing more Southerly in the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: New snow overnight and today is affecting slopes mainly above 400 metres. Winds have been generally West to West-North-Westerly very strong overnight decreasing through the day. The freezing level is around 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: New snow and strong winds have formed deep drifts and unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations, areas most affected are sheltered gullies and slopes with a North through East to South-Easterly aspect mainly above 850 metres. Fragile cornices exist above these locations. Windward slopes have been heavily scoured and are becoming firm and icy in places with generally good stability. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
