Avalanche Activity

CM 20/2. NE to SE aspects above 850m. Overnight and into morning significant instability. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: A period of instability overnight will significantly affect the snowpack, mainly on North-East to South-East aspects above 850m, where greatest deposits of windslab are present and avalanches are likely. Cornices will be prone to collapse on these aspects. Sheltered terrain features on North and South aspects will also be affected. All other aspects are scoured and generally stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Winds will be moderate strength Southerly, veering overnight to mainly strong Westerly. Light snow initially, turning to more persistent rain above the summits, for a brief period through the night. There will then be snow showers throughout the daylight hours as the temperatures drop. Freezing level will rise above the summits overnight for a few hours and then slowly drop back to around 500m by the end of the day.

Observed Weather Influences: A day of very light winds backing from Westerly to Southerly during the day. There was no precipitation. The freezing level was around 400m. East and South facing slopes were exposed to sun in the morning before clouding over in the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: Above 850m on North-East to South East aspects there are significant areas of poor to moderately bonded windslab. Wind sheltered locations were most affected. On these same aspects, below 850m, there are isolated areas of windslab. On all other aspects there was evidence of scouring, and the slopes were generally stable and icy. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
